January 2014 Wrap-Up

In My Life

HOORAY JANUARY IS OVER!! January wasn’t that great of a month for me, and it’s hard to say why. It’s not like anything awful happened(for which I’m very grateful), but there was a lot of internal struggle for sure. I wasn’t just feeling pretty down for the first three weeks. This past week has been much better, though. I think one thing is that it’s hard to adjust to coming back to life after a break, and I was sort of distant(emotionally) from the people I’m closest too. That started changing at the end of the month, though, so hopefully that keeps up. The struggles, though, the struggles. My debit card was put on ATM only by my bank(because I shopped at a “compromised data” store–aka, Michael’s) so I’ve been living in 2005. Then, my kitchen sink/garbage disposal decided to stop working & fill up–and since my landlord only takes maintenance request via email, it’s still not working. Sigh.

I did make a lot of progress on some projects, though, including some writing projects, which is always nice! I am in love with Scrivener. And I’ve had to start thinking about finding a new apartment, since my lease is up in a few months. Eep! I hate finding a place to live, honestly. Such a hassle every time.

In Tweets:

Sounds like a fun addition to a monthly wrap-up, yes? Who DOESN’T like to look at their tweets over the past month?(Well, me, normally, but I’m gonna try this out anyway).

I watched

Well, I finally caught up on Supernatural. I was watching this season as it airs, but I loathed with a passion the Wizard of Oz episode, and I needed a break after that. Luckily, the episodes after that one have been much better(well, mostly). I don’t really care that much about the overarching plot of this season–very much been there, did that right now–but on the whole, a vast improvement. Especially starting with “First Born.” Now I feel we might be getting somewhere. . .

I also have still been making my way through Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I finished season 3, which I really liked, and have moved on to season 4. I really liked the first few episodes of season 4, even though things got sort of. . . weird after that, but I definitely saw it through to the end of the season. And “Hush” was amazing! Definitely the creepiest episode and one of my favorites so far.

I also started watching Firefly, since it’s been recommended to me only about a thousand times. I bought the series DVD on Amazon a few months ago when it was a daily deal($6! Can’t pass that up). I watched the first episode, and. . . I was bored. But I’ll continue watching, I promise!

In case you’re thinking that’s a lot of TV . . . it is, even for me. Basically, I watched a season and a half of Buffy, almost half a season of Supernatural, and the first ep of Firefly within like 3 and a half weeks. Don’t judge me!

I listened

One of my January goals was to listen to more music, so I set about accomplishing that! I took to Twitter asking for suggestions, and a friend recommended the Oh Hello’s to me, and I learned I LOVE their stuff!

Also, I bought the new Switchfoot album. I quite enjoy “Who We Are”. It gives me flashbacks to middle school, in a weird(and oddly positive) way.

blogging life

My favorite Top Ten Tuesday:

I LOVED getting to look forward to some 2014 debuts!

My favorite review:

It wasn’t a positive review, but I was proud of my review for Stung, just because I think I did a good job of spelling out the problems I had.

On the more positive side, I really enjoyed reviewing the audiobook for Ready Player One.

My favorite discussion:

I had a few really interesting discussions this month! I don’t know about favorite, but the most popular for sure was my discussion about BookTube and Book Blogging!

I also really enjoyed getting to make a flowchart about some underrated YA reads. Which I’d have to update now because Charm & Strange won an award!

  1. I’m sorry that January wasn’t good. February will be better! I am here for you! 😀 *sending hugs to Texas*

Musical rambling: I love the Oh Hellos! That whole album is really good. You might also like The Gray Havens and their EP Where Eyes Don’t Go. It’s pretty good! Um … some more folky stuff might be Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors. Their newest album Good Light is really good, but I love their song “Fire and Dynamite” off their Chasing Someday album the most of all their work. Seabird is a really good band. Not sure if we’ve talked about them before? They’re awesome. Sailship is another fun little band. It’s one guy (I think), and it’s kind of electronica Owl City-esque but with lyrics that make sense and it’s a little more subdued. We definitely already talked about Sleep for Sleepers, yes?

Thank you! Hugs can travel across the continental US–little known fact.

I’ll have to check out The Gray Havens! I’ve heard some Drew Holcomb stuff, and I remember liking it. I like Seabird! And yes, Sleep for Sleepers, for sure(though I think I need to officially add their music to my Spotify. . . don’t think I’ve done that yet!)

  2. I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been down this month =( Maybe it’s just the January blues?

Haha, the Tweet about the GR goal. I wish it made snarky comments if you got behind… that would be funny.

I have to say, the first episode of Firefly kind of drags. But keep going and it’s totally worth it. Such a brilliant series =)

That’s a lot of reads for this month!

    • stormydawnc

lol, well at the beginning goodreads was all “Nice start.” And I (& a few others) talked about how we could just FEEEL the sarcasm dripping off that statement.
Good to know about Firefly! I have the DVD, so I think I might try to watch one episode a week.

  3. I was also a little bit sad in January but things are getting better slowly. I really hope that this month gets better for both of us. It is 2014 after all.

Whoa, you read a lot of books! I’m lucky if I get to 10 because life. I’m a relatively fast reader but I can’t read fast when there are too many distractions.

I just bought Fire and Thorns series so I’m glad to see you enjoyed it.

Ha ha I love all of your tweets! I need to be around on Twitter when you’re tweeting. =D

      Here’s to a better month!
That’s not really a normal reading month for me by any means. I typically read about 12 books a month, but I was reading a *lot* in January, because I didn’t have many obligations outside work(which is starting to pick back up now), and I’ve been avoiding revising my NaNoWriMo project, so I’ve been reading instead!

  4. I’ve heard so much about Firefly too. I need to watch it but haven’t yet. I don’t know… I mean… gaw I should just start. I am finally getting around to watching Supernatural (I’m on season 3) and I love it!!

It’s difficult to start something when so many people love it! Especially something like Firefly, which has a huge fanbase(considering it only lasted one season!)
Supernatural is probably my favorite show after Gilmore Girls, and season 4-5 are my favorite, so you have a lot of great TV ahead of you!

Every time I think about finding an apartment, I feel the urge to go take a nap instead. Ha! I hate looking for housing.

  5. January can be a tough month what with adjusting to life after the holidays as well as the weather and such like, also it sounds like you’ve had a rough time of it besides those things. I’m glad you’re feeling better in yourself now though – we all have phases like that I think.
I don’t have a Twitter (shocker, right?!) so it’s nice to see those added in to your monthly wrap up post.
Here’s to a more positive February!

    • stormydawnc

Yeah, there’s always the weird feeling that accompanies a new year. Hopefully February will be better.

  6. How did I miss all of those great tweets? I wish I was funny on Twitter, but I just can’t express myself properly in only 140 characters haha

I can’t believe your landlord only answers to email! Isn’t that illegal? Good luck with the apartment hunt – I moved something like 6 times in 5 years, and it was awful. Our current spot is great though, so we’re going on three years here!

    • stormydawnc

140 characters is hard! It’s a great way to procasinat–I mean, converse, with people.
Who knows as for as email goes? That apartment agency is not the best. I *hate* having to move apartments a lot. Hate. I sort of figure it happens in college but I really want to spend more than NINE months at one place that is a good place to live. It’s so difficult!
